Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen

I. Why We Need faith

A.     To Please God – Hebrews 11:6

B.     To Live – Romans 1: 16 -17

C.    Jesus Said It – Mark 11:22

D.    For Justification – Romans 3:28 ; Galatians 2:16

E.     For Righteousness – Romans 9:30

F.     To Keep from Sin – Romans 14:23

G.    For Salvation – Ephesians 2:8

H.     To Overcome the World – I John 5:4


  1. We need faith to be saved and to begin to walk with God.  .
  2. We need faith to continue that walk victoriously and to overcome the curse of the law.
  3. We need faith to finish our course triumphantly


II. Definition of Faith:

            A. Faith (Greek definition)

1. (Pitho) meaning “To convince by argument, true or false


2. (Pisto) meaning “A firm persuasion or conviction based upon  


            B. Substance – (Hupostasis)

                        1. A setting under

                        2. A firm foundation, that which sits under, confidence

            C. Hope – (Elpis)

                        1. Anticipation, usually with pleasure

                        2. Favorable and confident expectation having to do with the

                        unseen and the future.


III. What Faith Is:  

A.     Faith is a vital force as is hope and love.  (I Corinthians 13:13)

B.     Faith is believing in your heart that something you cannot see is going to come to pass

1.      Fear also has the same meaning, that something you cannot see with your eyes is going to come to pass

2.      Faith is of God

3.      Fear is a lie from the Devil

C.    Faith is believing that God loves you enough to fulfill His Promise to you

D.    Faith is believing that God meant what He said, when He said it.
